Great post. I had to miss the SVMoms event with PBSKids so it was helpful to read what you learned at your event. My son used to love Super Why but now that he's been reading independently for 2 years, we stopped watching it. You've inspired me to try it for my 2.5 year old to see what she thinks. And since she's a red-head (who also loves to wear a red superhero cape), maybe she'll identify with Wonder Red!

Great background on a really great show. My five year old son likes the show but I've even found that, while my 11 and 9 year old girls might roll their eyes when it comes on, they often get involved in the story too! I've also found that watching the show is a great way for my older kids to get a little extra dose of remedial phonics. My oldest is actually dyslexic and my middle child is not a strong speller either so telling them we'll watch the show "for Michael's sake" gives them a way to benefit from the show while saving face. Plus, they occasionally try using some of the techniques to "teach" Michael making up their own story lines. And anyone who has ever taught knows that teaching is the best way to learn! Thanks!!

Professor Snack -- thanks for the vivid comments (I love the image of you wielding the Princess Presto wand!) and the tips about the DVD!

Good to see you posting as well, jules, one of my first and most frequent commenters! As always, I appreciate your support!

Sherry... gasp... a Super WHY! virgin! You'll never sing the ABCs the same way again!

You are right, TV is not the same as preschool, and I wish every child could go to preschool, it is truly amazing to watch the impact it can have on a child to go. There seems to be a lot of confusion in our country about what preschool is about -- whether it is academics or the social experience or both. I've seen some programs have all the academics but miss the boat entirely on the social side.

I hope you join us on this interactive journey -- it's fun!

Melanie - I'm LOL -- many times a day I think, "we need to change this story!" You know... when the cat has peed on the bed... when JavaGirl has spilled milk all over herself...

We've never watched the show, but we'll definitely check it out. My almost 3-year-old daughter likes the shows on Noggin, but I'm not a big fan. One of my pet peeves is Noggin's slogan - "It's like preschool on TV." While I think kids can learn a lot from watching certain shows, I think it's going too far to equate it with participating in a preschool experience. Sorry - just had to vent. Thanks for the info re PBS and Super WHY?.

my daughter and son love the show. i do believe they have learned more from watching that than my older learned from watching sesame street. my middle child learned all her abc's and is learning reading basics. we've also heard her say, "we need to change this story" about her own situation. this cracks me up.
