Hershey’s Drops – Review and Giveaway

Just months after re-awakening my love of  s’mores, The Hershey Company sent me a not-yet-in-stores product called Hershey’s Drops.  This new candy, which will be on shelves in December, comes in two flavors, Milk Chocolate and Cookies ‘n’ Creme.  And I must say, I’m a fan of both.

The sales pitch for these is that they are bite-sized drop without a candy shell.  They have a thin confectioner’s glaze on them that prevents them from melting right away in your hand, yet doesn’t affect the taste or give you that crunchy candy-coated shell of other chocolate candies.  Hershey’s drops are roughly the size of a quarter, so it’s a much heftier candy than M&M’s, which are manufactured by Mars Incorporated.

Hershey sent me a bag of each flavor to try out and they will give a bag to 30 of my readers!  More on the giveaway at the end of this post!

Mixed Reactions

I instantly loved both flavors.  But I decided to give out samples to get some reactions.  My husband, the man who once declared a particular dessert was “too much chocolate” (I do not believe there is such a thing), remarked after eating the Hershey’s Milk Chocolate Drops, “I could eat a thousand of these!”  My son gave both flavors “two thumbs up” (that is JavaBoy’s highest praise).  I took the Drops to a board meeting, where reaction was mixed — too sweet for some, or comments on the texture, while others really liked them.

Fudgy” is the word several people used to describe the Hershey’s Milk Chocolate drops, and I tend to agree — there is a richness of taste and then a not-quite-hard consistency when you bite into them.  This is part of why I really like these Drops.  Also, the size of them makes one Drop a good dose of chocolate (for someone with better self-control than I), much more so than smaller chocolates which seem to require a handful to feel like you really got a mouthful of chocolate, and a better option than eating an entire candy bar.

The Hershey’s Cookies ‘n’ Creme is a different tasting experience.  The drops are white with flecks of cookie, which gives them a bumpier appearance than the Milk Chocolate Drops.  When you bite into one, you instantly feel the crunch of the cookie bits — which I liked, but some people didn’t.  The taste, to be honest, to me is like eating an inside-out cream-filled chocolate sandwich cookie — which I think is fantastic!  You taste more of the “creme” than the “cookie,” producing a yummy result!

Nutritional Facts

Let’s face it, this is candy.  However, I have to say that I’m impressed at the generous portion listed as a serving size — 15 pieces for the Milk Chocolate Drops and 14 for the Cookies ‘n’ Creme Drops.  The Milk Chocolate drops have 200 calories, 12 g of fat (7 g Saturated, 0 g Trans Fat), and 23 g of sugars per serving.  The Hershey’s Cookies ‘n’ Creme have 210 calories and 11 g of fat( 7 g Saturated, 0 g Trans Fat), and 19 g of sugars per serving.

The Final Say

In our household, Hershey’s Milk Chocolate Drops and Hershey’s Cookies ‘n’ Creme Drops are a new favorite.  My husband wanted to know if he could participate in the giveaway!  When the bags hit the shelves, they will come in 8 oz. pouches which make them a convenient stocking stuffer.

If you like Hershey’s products in general, you’ll probably like these.  Enter my giveaway and try them out for yourself!

My mouth is watering hearing about the drops! Pick me! Pick me!

My holiday tip: Consider switching to LED lights. When my old lights break I try to replace them with LED lights. Unfortunately, I’ve noticed the LED lights sell out pretty fast in stores, so buy them early in the season.

  2. You had me at chocolate! And I love Hershey’s chocolate. It’s a classic. When I was little, Santa stuffed my stocking with red and green kisses! AND today, when I am down in the dumps, a classic Hershey with almonds does the trick.

My holiday tip: When I was little, we were allowed to open ONE present on Christmas eve, and it was always new pajamas. Turns out, my mom wanted to make sure we looked good for pictures on Christmas day! :-)

  3. javamom says:

My family has the same tradition! PJs on Christmas Eve!

  4. Jill says:

    Yum!

I grew up decorating dozens of sugar cookies with my mom every year. It has been so much fun to continue this tradition with my son.

  5. krcrafts says:

Yummmm…. your candy review sounds delicious!

We recently started a new tradition in our extended family. After Thanksgiving dinner, we each choose a name of a family member, then on Christmas eve, we give our person a handmade gift. At first, there were many cries of “I’m not crafty”, but it turns out, everyone has their special talent and it’s become our favorite tradition.

  6. Sheryl T. says:

It takes a lot for me to comment on a blog. Chocolate definately does it?

My tip: We have a huge stack of Christmas books for adults and kids, some from my childhood. I keep them seperate and pack them away from January to November. It is a huge thrill to bring them out each year and sit by the fireplalce and read them over and over. It is like opening an early present. Then on Christmas Eve we always read these three – Twas the Night Before Christmas, The Grinch Who Stole Christmas, and the nativity story.

  7. tkromey says:

Yumm! Fantastic review…we’d Love to try them out too!

I also LOVE the idea of new PJs on Christmas Eve (good call on the pretty pictures, Laptop TV Mom’s Mom!!!).

My tip: Do some holiday shopping After Christmas…the sales are unbelievable as retailers just want to get the stuff off the shelves. Just remember to store your holiday deals in a place where you will remember for next year!

  8. Mmmmmm…. they look like m&ms, but I’m glad I read on — they sound DELICIOUS!

  9. Kelly Atkinson says:

This sounds yummy! I cant wait to try some.

A holiday tip I have is decroating related. I fill clear vases of different sizes with ornaments of various colors depending on my holiday theme. I get the ornaments after Christmas at half off and save for the following year. It’s a quick and cost effective decorating tool!

  10. Mary Johnson says:

Yummy! My holiday tip is our tradition and this was started when my five year old was born… Santa only brings three presents to each child, one for each of the wise men. They also get one from mommy and daddy. This does not include the stocking ;) Limiting the number of presents has really forced me to chose wisely and now that there are two kids it will help me stay on budget :)

  11. Elaine says:

We celebrate St. Nicholas Day on December 6. I put coins, small toys, and little chocolates in my children’s shoes at night – just like my mom used to do!

  12. One of our favorite Christmas traditions is to have a special breakfast Christmas morning: birthday cake for the kids (to celebrate Jesus’ birthday!) and a yummy overnight French Toast casserole for the adults.

  13. I don’t know if this counts as a “tip” or not, but something cool we’ve done is wrap twelve holiday/winter picture books (some ours, some the library’s) and for the twelve nights leading up to Christmas, the kids take turns opening a book a night to read together before bedtime. Fun times, and who doesn’t love opening a present??

Thanks for the giveaway– I’m feeling lucky since you’ll be drawing the winners on my birthday! :)

  14. Wehaf says:

Tip – you can make pumpkin pies in advance and freeze them!

  15. javamom says:

I am enjoying all these holiday tips! So excited you are participating!

  16. Amy says:

Our favorite tradition on Christmas Eve is to go to Mass together and then get together for a big meal at a local place. Then, we come home and open only one gift each.

  17. Jennifer says:

For thanksgiving, we make a thermos full of hot Spiced Apple Cider. It stays hot all day long and along with some light appetizers, keeps the hunger at bay until the Turkey is served. It smells like fall.

  18. Lourdes says:

    These sound delicious.

We celebrate on Christmas eve and my favorite is home made hot chocolate at around 2am after opening presents. It is supper easy to make and has a smell the fills the whole house.

  19. My tip (and this works for every holiday) is I’ve started keeping my menus from year to year so I know what I made in the past. When the holiday is over I’ll go in the file and make notes on if it was good or what modifications I made – and I also write down who was there so I know if I’ve served this to you before!

  20. Aubrey Fick says:

My favorite holiday tradition is playing board games with the family on Christmas. Wonderful time to talk and laugh and enjoy each other.

  21. Sarah Caldwell says:

My favorite holiday tradition is making homemade pizza on Christmas Eve. This is really getting me in the holiday spirit!

  22. MyLifeAsItIs says:

One of our Thanksgiving traditions is our table cloth. It started as a plain beige table cloth. Each year, everyone who is at the table with us write something they are thankful for. We use fabric markers in the fall colors (brown, orange, yellow, red, green).
Adam loves reading all the postings each year!

  23. Lisa says:

I’ll bite! So a holiday (Thanksgiving) tradition for us – apple, peanut butter crescent rolls. A great way to have a little bite for lunch before a large dinner. Mom started this decades ago and I still enjoy it. For those with nut allergies – try the butters you use but make sure they can be baked without separating.

Take a package of crescent rolls, open and separate
Spread as much peanut butter (or alternative butter) as you like on the rolls
    Take apples and chop finely
Spread apples on top of the peanut butter
    Roll crescents up
    Bake according to instructions

    Hubby’s tradition – football. :-)

  24. Jennifer says:

So many wonderful ideas. One thing that has become one our favorite new traditions, is to cover a wall of the house with brown builders paper(at any hardware store) and hang it with painter’s tape so not to ruin the walls. Then we give the kids crayons and they decorate it as they want. This is great for parties with lots of kids and/or artistic adults. We even made one door-sized sheet as a guest book for my son’s Birthday party. Everyone loves it, especially my youngest boy(age3) who loves to draw on the walls anytime he gets a writing instrument. Luckily my husband is a painter.

  25. Last year I was really discouraged about advent calendars. So many of them seemed to be filled with chocolate, or just all about the “getting” of things, versus the season as a whole. While I may be spiritual, neither me nor my family are overly religious, so I also didn’t want just Bible quotes.

I started a new tradition for my boys. I got a few Christmas-themed shirt boxes from Harris Teeter, found some small Christmas-themed images online (candles, baby Jesus, ornaments, Christmas trees, etc.) and using a craft knife, cut out windows, glued in the images, and after they had dried, added the back of the box as a support.

My boys were so thrilled with their Advent calendars, and I plan to make this a recurring tradition for years to come.

  26. Jill M says:

    Who can pass up chocolate!

Holiday Tip: We burn a bayberry candle for each member of the family on Christmas eve — all the way until it goes out by itself (so don’t get those 14 inch tapers! It is supposed to bring good luck.
