Summer Fun Guide 2009

Fun In the Summer
(or how to remain sane with children)
2009 Edition — first web version!
Content may include language pulled directly from websites, brochures and other promotional materials for the sake of accuracy and clarity. This guide is mostly a compilation with some additional narrative interjected. Significant sources of information include the Fairfax County and Loudoun County government web sites and the Our Kids Newsletter (www.our-kids.com).
This is the third year for the “Summer Fun Guide” and this is the first year it has officially gone online. Putting it online allows us to add content as new content is available or changes, so come back often. This guide takes a lot of work to put together and many of you have emailed with wonderful praise — if you wouldn’t mind sharing your kind words in the comments section, that will help keep us going with further editions of the Summer Fun Guide and the Fall Fun Guide and will let our blog readers (and future advertisers) know that this is a well-read part of our site. Enjoy — from mommy desperate to stave off summer boredom to another!

Libraries have lots of summer programs, divided by age. Many of them are listed in the “by date” section but there are way too many to type — go to these sites to find what’s appropriate for your children. Remember that most require registration and they are very popular, so give yourself two weeks in advance to register.
- Fairfax County: http://www.fairfaxcounty.gov/library/programsevents.htm
- ALSO, the summer reading program, Read Around the World runs June 18-September 5 at all the branches. Preschoolers through sixth graders read 15 books (kids can have books read to them), and students entering grades 7-12 read eight books. Participants who finish reading the required number of books by September 5 receive coupon books filled with all kinds of summer treats — read more in this post. Kids can read any books they choose; reading suggestions can be found in This Month, the library’s newsletter (available in library branches). I will update this when details are available.

They have a new playground, built just this year. You can pay-as-you-go, buy a fast pass with 25 visits, or buy a membership for the pool and fitness center. They now have an outdoor playground as well.
- Burke Lake Park – 7315 Ox Road, Fairfax Station, VA 22039 703-323-6600 http://www.fairfaxcounty.gov/parks/burkelake/ Miniature golf, miniature train ride, carousel, ice cream parlor, picnic areas with grills and public restrooms, fitness trails, playgrounds, campground and camp store and 4.68 mile hiking/biking trail.

Also, there was coupon in last year’s Fairfax County Library summer reading coupon book.
- My new personal favorite – Hidden Pond Park and Nature Center (don’t confuse it with Hidden OAKS) 8511 Greeley Blvd., Springfield, VA. This place has it all – a playground, a wonderful wooded trail, a pond full of turtles, hiking trails through the woods, bike paths, a stream, and to top it all off – a FANTASTIC nature center. The volunteers at the nature center will often pull out a skink or turtle for the children to touch. There are magnifying glasses to take a look and, b/c the back of the nature center is actually on the second floor, a solid window wall from which to get an eye-to-eye view of the birds at the bird feeder (and if that isn’t close enough – they will lend you binoculars). There are puzzles, a coloring station – just all kinds of things. This is a very kid-friendly nature center and they have put up with some very active younger siblings. Bonus – they sell cold bottled water and popsicles for those really hot days. And there are bathrooms.
- Learn more about Loudoun County parks at: http://www.loudoun.gov/Default.aspx?tabid=883 and http://www.loudoun.gov/Default.aspx?tabid=924 Some favorites include:
- Ashburn Park is especially nice and shady — 43645 Partlow Road, Ashburn
- Claude Moore Park – 21544 Old Vestal’s Gap Road Sterling, VA 20164 Phone: 571-258-3700 http://www.loudoun.gov/prcs/parks/claude.htm This park has a wonderful nature center with lots of hands on activities (animals skins, bones, shells, etc.), books, puzzles, usually a new activity each month to do. Simply terrific. There are picnic tables near the nature center, so bring a picnic! There is also the Heritage Farm Museum (there is an admission fee for this) which is a neat please-touch type of exhibit about farm life in our area in older times. You can weigh and measure grain in a sensory table, grind some grain, “milk” the life-sized plastic cow, pick up wooden eggs from underneath the rubber hens in the chicken coop, try on historic farm outfits, walk through a general store, ride on small tractors, etc.

- National Zoo - 3001 Connecticut Ave, NW in DC http://nationalzoo.si.edu/ Easily done in a day, you can drive or take the Metro. Food is available, but expensive, so you may want to pack your own lunch. The small mammal house was a big hit with our children. Check the website for activities and special notices specific to the day you are going.
- Museums – we certainly have a bounty of them in DC as well as the Udvar-Hazy Air and Space Museum in Dulles. I’ve heard the air and space museum has free parking after 4 (b/c it’s not long before closing time) so it’s a great place to take kids just to get their energy out – large space for them to roam in.

- Shenandoah Valley Discovery Museum (Children’s Museum) Winchester, VA – http://www.discoverymuseum.net/ A small but terrific children’s museum closer than Richmond and worth the drive. Not as big as the Richmond one, but still fun, especially for smaller children.
- Knoebels Amusement Park http://www.knoebels.com/ review from my friend Jill: this place is in PA but we went last year and it was just great. It is like taking a step back in time to an old-timey amusement park. It is especially great for little ones as they have a very large selection of kiddie rides, all in a woody shaded setting. It won Best of Philly and it does deserve it. It is up in the Pocono area.

looks awesome!
the guide contains a lot of great, useful information, but I’m struggling with the format – is there a way to organize it so you don’t have to scroll all the way down to see all the info – ex: links for parks, performing arts and then printable pages once you click on the links – re: the calendar, it would be great if you could get all the info for a month on one page that moms could print and put on the refrigerator – maybe just the basic info on the correct date and then a second sheet w/more details . . . this is a great resource . . thanks for taking the time to put it together
Sherry – I had thought about breaking it up into different pages like that. In the past, some parents said they just print the page of just that week so they liked having the info all together so they only had to keep the page of that particular week and have all the details in one place. I may keep playing with the formatting now that it is on the web to see what works best and keeps the majority happy. I was getting so many emails pressing to get it up though that I wanted to get it up ASAP. Stay tuned for further improvements, and when I get around to it, photos of the parks!
Thanks so much for this! And for those wondering about the Lowe’s/Home Depot classes – Anthony has been going to both sites since he was just over 2.5 years old. His grandfather takes him and they both love their “guy time” together. We have all the projects and Anthony loves to show his little brother what he “banged” while he was gone.
This is great – what a fantastic resource! Thanks.
Fabulous!!!!! The kids will be pooped come Sept. with all the events I’ll be taking them too.
I’m posting it on my blog too as parents are always looking for fun, low cost things to do in the summer and this is AWESOME! A friend passed me this post, thanks so much! Blessings and thanks from one java head to another!
Wow! This is amazing. Hopefully it will help you and so many others have a great time this summer!
Thank you sooo much for putting this VERY valuable summer resource online! I really appreciate all of your hard work in putting it together : )
I would add Signal Bay Waterpark in Manassas. I hear it’s great for preschoolers. http://www.cityofmanassaspark.us/public_documents/manassasparkva_parksrec/signal
Also check out “FREE” bowling all summer at Centreville AMF Bowling. Pay $23.95 for 2 adults and 4 kids to bowl for free all summer, http://www.kidsbowlfree.com.
Another Rainy Day activity, call RestonInterfaith’s Food Pantry at 571-323-1400 to see what their immediate needs are. Take the kids shopping for some of the items and deliver to the pantry at 11484 Washington Plaza West, Suite 120, Reston, VA.
Wow, what a great resource! Thanks so much for taking the time to put this all together. I no longer have to scurry around to a zillion other websites to glean all this info, all I have to do now is come here! Bless you for all the effort you put into this, it is GREATLY appreciated
.
Just FYI- but Baby Pictures is only once a month now and it’s at noon. It’s usually around the 17th of each month. The website is: http://www.nationalamusements.com/programs/babypics_schedule.asp?theatre=8572 (movies are posted about 5-6 days before the showing!)
Thanks for the update, Priscilla! The movie theaters are usually the last ones to update their summer schedules — I’d get the summer guide out weeks earlier if they’d update sooner!! And I’ve been out of the Baby Pictures audience for a few years! : )
I’m so happy to have this online now — this back and forth feedback is terrific!
This is an AMAZING resource – I’ve just spent an hour adding events and activities to our family calendar! And, I posted it to my Facebook page! Thank you!
You should also reference http://www.visitloudoun.org/events/ for events in Loudoun, including all the fairs and festivals held throughout the county. Select the category for “Family Events” to narrow down the list.
Thanks again!

Wonderful list. I would like to mention Workhouse Arts Center in Lorton, VA (www.workhousearts.org), which is a recently-opened art gallery that houses artists-in-residence. Its theater and arts camps run through the summer. A bit on the pricey side, but the programs are wonderful for serious budding artists and thespians. Link to summer programs: http://www.workhousearts.org/docs/WACCatalog2009.pdf.
Thanks for all the great info, I really appreciate the “By Date” section!
Wonderful resource!!!! Thanks for all the hard work!!! I will look forward to checking out your fall guide. So excited to have some family fun in NOVA!!! It will be great for when my nephews come to visit as well. My sister-in-law is so jealous because we have such wonderful things to do in this area. Thanks for making it even easier to find them!!!
Love your summer fun guide!
If your kids enjoy animals, I would also recommend visiting the Old Mine Ranch! Included in admission are a pony ride, a hay ride, a huge variety of animals to pet and feed, tunnel slides, rolling barrels, and play areas. My preschool boys have a ball every time we go.
17504 Mine Road, Dumfries, VA 22026 (www.oldmineranch.net)
This has been a great resource. Thank you!
