Camps and Classes

Camp Invention – several dates and locations. A fun, creative, 5-day summer enrichment for rising 1st – 6th graders, part of the nationally acclaimed, non-profit, creative science enrichment camp held in 48 states. There are several locations in Maryland and Virginia so visit the site to find the location closest to you. JavaBoy attended a couple of and enjoyed this camp immensely!

Mad Science – Robots, Chemistry, Slime Science and more. The kids and I love Mad Science! In addition to after-school programs, they offer day camp options all summer long throughout the DC area.

Ideaventions – A science and technology enrichment program that makes me want to be a kid again!

Camps and Classes at Ellanor C. Lawrence Park

– Located at 5040 WalneyRoad, Chantilly, VA 703-631-0013
There are several that still have openings, but registrations go so fast, it is easiest for you to just go visit the site:

A great list of other camps — why re-invent the wheel?

Michaels Craft Store – their web site is not as easy to navigate as it used to be. The BEST way to know what is going on at your local store seems to be to use their mobile app on your smartphone (there is a QR code in stores and on their web sites, and I presume you can just search your phone’s app store). The extra advantage is that you can now also just download coupons on your phone.

  • Make-It and Take-Its are advertised on the corporate level, but I advise calling your local store ahead of time to verify they are doing them.
  • Classes are supposed to be listed on the web site by store location, some stores choose not to list them online.

Home Depot Kids Workshop – First Saturday of every month between 9am and noon- see web site for more details.  Although it says ages 5-12, I know people who have taken children (boys, in particular) who were younger.  They tend to list project a month or two at a time.

Lowe’s Build and Grow Clinics – Although recommended for elementary school kids, I know people who have taken younger children – use your own discretion.  Check out the site for class projects, dates, and sign ups.
